Car design is an art form, and remains critical to establishing a brand. Every manufacturer has its own unique lines and shapes that allow consumers to distinguish different companies, much like a painter’s brush strokes. However, with the recent demand for more and more features and tech, creating an all-encompassing design has been getting increasingly difficult. Because of this Nissan is taking a bold step into developing an artificial intelligence that can design a car on its own from pictures and design specifications.
Imagine this: a company wants to add a USB port for charging or playing music to a center display. Sounds simple right? But you can’t just stick it anywhere; it needs to be easily accessible, not displace another button or port and wiring—and software needs to be added to make it run correctly. Every change shifts the entire design, and this is where Nissan’s AI steps in. A computer can much more easily calculate the adjustments and added stress that will be put on the vehicle from a relatively simple change, and with enough data can even correct for this by changing materials or moving other parts. This would happen in a matter of seconds or minutes, which could take days for a human.
While this AI is currently in the testing phase, results are promising. The computer has already been able to create a design for a never before seen car, and while it was not perfect, it’s a strong head start.
